Arkanoid

Arkanoid is a tile-breaking arcade game, originally launched in 1986 by Taito. It takes the familiar concept of bouncing a ball to clear blocks and adds its own distinctive elements for the arcade platform.

In Arkanoid, you control a small paddle at the bottom of the screen. Your primary task is to bounce a ball upwards to destroy all the bricks that fill the upper portion of the playfield. The ball ricochets off the paddle, the walls, and the bricks. If the ball falls past your paddle, you lose a life. Clearing a level requires you to break every single brick on screen. As you progress through the stages, the brick patterns become more complex, and new challenges are introduced.

A key feature of Arkanoid is the variety of power-ups that can be obtained by breaking special bricks or specific targets. These items, which fall from the top of the screen, can alter your paddle (making it larger, allowing it to shoot lasers, or creating a barrier) or affect the ball (splitting it into multiple balls, changing its speed, or making it pass through bricks). The game also introduces enemies that move around the screen and can interfere with the ball or your paddle, adding another layer to the gameplay beyond simple block destruction. Later stages in Arkanoid even feature boss encounters that require specific strategies to defeat.
