Experience Multimedia Gaming with the Sega CD / Mega-CD
The Sega CD, known as the Mega-CD in most regions outside North America and Brazil, is a CD-ROM accessory for the Sega Genesis, produced by Sega as part of the fourth generation of video game consoles.
This add-on was released in Japan in 1991, North America in 1992, and Europe in 1993. The Sega CD not only played CD games but was also compatible with audio CDs and CD+G discs, and could even play Genesis cartridges when inserted into the attached Genesis.
While the Sega CD significantly expanded the Genesis' capabilities with full-motion video, CD-quality audio, and a larger storage capacity, it faced commercial challenges due to its high price and a limited software library. Despite its struggles, it produced some memorable games and pioneered many concepts in CD-ROM gaming that would become standard in later console generations.
