Donkey Kong

Donkey Kong is a seminal arcade platform game developed and published by Nintendo in 1981 for the arcade platform.

In Donkey Kong, you take on the role of Jumpman, a carpenter trying to save his girlfriend, Pauline, from the titular ape. You navigate increasingly challenging, multi-screened levels that are essentially construction sites. Your primary actions involve running, jumping over obstacles, and climbing ladders. Donkey Kong himself sits at the top of each screen, hurling barrels down at you. You must time your jumps carefully to avoid these rolling hazards, as well as other dangers like bouncing springs and enemies that appear. Sometimes, picking up a hammer temporarily allows you to smash certain obstacles, but it limits your movement. The game's design focuses on vertical progression, with each stage requiring you to ascend to the next platform while dodging the constant barrage from Donkey Kong. Success means reaching Pauline, but failure means starting the level over.

The game presents four distinct stage types, each with its own arrangement of girders, ladders, and unique challenges. You might be dodging barrels on sloped surfaces, navigating a maze of conveyor belts and springs, or climbing past fire elements. The pacing of Donkey Kong escalates with each successful rescue, introducing faster barrel speeds and more complex enemy patterns, pushing your timing and reflexes to their limit as you make your way up.
