In Galaga, you maneuver your starfighter at the bottom of the screen, facing off against swarms of alien craft that descend in intricate patterns. These enemies will perform dive-bomb attacks and unleash their own laser fire, which you must dodge while returning fire with your own ship's weaponry. A distinctive element of Galaga is the Boss Galaga ship. This larger enemy can attempt to capture your fighter with a tractor beam. If successful, your ship is taken away, and you continue with a single fighter. However, if you manage to shoot the Boss Galaga while it's in the process of capturing your ship, you can rescue it. This rescue allows your fighter to join forces with the captured ship, creating a powerful dual fighter that fires two shots simultaneously, significantly increasing your offensive capability.

The aliens in Galaga also perform elaborate formations and sometimes enter 'Challenging Stages' where they fly in specific sequences, offering a test of precision shooting to earn bonus points. Successfully completing these stages rewards players with extra points. The objective in Galaga is to survive progressively difficult waves of attackers and achieve the highest score possible by eliminating all enemy craft.
