About Gray Matter Games
Founded in 1994 in Oakville, Ontario, Gray Matter Inc. began its journey in the console market of the mid-90s. Initially known for their technical proficiency on 16-bit hardware, they developed titles such as the cult classic side-scroller 'B.O.B.' and the SNES version of 'Super R.B.I. Baseball'. Their early work demonstrated a versatility that allowed them to handle various genres, from sports simulations to action-platformers, laying a solid foundation for their future expansion.
The studio underwent a significant transformation in the late 90s, pivoting towards PC gaming and the burgeoning First-Person Shooter (FPS) market. They gained notoriety with 'Kingpin: Life of Crime', a gritty, crime-themed shooter powered by the Quake II engine. This success attracted the attention of id Software and Activision, leading to their most acclaimed project: 'Return to Castle Wolfenstein' (2001). Gray Matter successfully revived the classic franchise, delivering a critically acclaimed single-player campaign that is still regarded as a benchmark in the genre.
Gray Matter continued their streak of high-profile FPS development with 'Call of Duty: United Offensive', the celebrated expansion pack for the original Call of Duty. Their expertise in crafting intense, scripted military campaigns made them a valuable asset in the industry. In 2002, the studio was acquired by Activision and was eventually merged into Treyarch in 2005, where their talent pool contributed to the development of the 'Call of Duty: Black Ops' series and other major titles.
