Relive Portable Color Gaming with the Sega Game Gear
The Game Gear is an 8-bit fourth-generation handheld game console released by Sega. It debuted in Japan on October 6, 1990, followed by North America and Europe in April 1991, and Australia in 1992. The Game Gear was Sega's direct competitor to Nintendo's monochrome Game Boy.
Notably, the Game Gear boasted a full-color backlit screen, a significant advantage over the original Game Boy's monochrome display. However, this vibrant display came at the cost of battery life, requiring six AA batteries compared to the Game Boy's four.
Despite its technical superiority, the Game Gear struggled to overcome the Game Boy's market dominance. This was partly due to Nintendo's stronger software library, coupled with the Game Boy's superior battery life and more affordable price point.
