Nintendogs: Chihuahua & Friends is a virtual pet simulation game released for the Nintendo DS in the mid-2000s. It places you in the role of a dog owner, tasked with caring for and training a canine companion.

Upon starting, you select from a variety of breeds, including the titular Chihuahua, and bring your new friend home. Your daily responsibilities involve feeding your dog, bathing it, throwing a ball for it to fetch, and generally interacting with it to keep it happy and healthy. You use the Nintendo DS stylus to directly pet, scratch, and guide your dog, making the connection feel more personal.

A significant part of the gameplay in Nintendogs: Chihuahua & Friends revolves around training. By speaking commands into the DS's microphone, you can teach your dog various tricks, from sitting and rolling over to more complex routines. The dog learns through repetition and positive reinforcement. You can also take your dog for walks in the park, where it can dig for items or interact with other dogs.

Progression is marked by entering your dog into various competitions, such as agility trials or obedience contests, where successful performances earn you cash. This currency can then be used to purchase food, toys, accessories, and even new dog breeds to expand your kennel. The focus is on the relationship you build and the journey of nurturing your pet.
