Players begin by selecting one of several initial breeds, with the full Nintendogs experience spanning multiple cartridge versions like Nintendogs: Dachshund & Friends, Nintendogs: Toy Poodle & New Friends, and Nintendogs: Chihuahua & Friends, each offering a selection of distinct dog breeds. You can adopt over 30 different breeds in total across these versions. Training involves teaching your dog commands like 'Sit,' 'Stay,' and 'Roll Over' through spoken words picked up by the DS microphone. You'll also spend time grooming your dog with the stylus, feeding it kibble and treats, and taking it for walks in local parks where it can interact with other dogs or fetch items like a red ball or a blue frisbee.

Beyond basic care, Nintendogs encourages interaction through activities such as playing fetch, teaching new tricks, and participating in agility challenges. The game features a local wireless mode allowing two Nintendogs owners to meet and have their dogs play together. The series continued on the Nintendo 3DS with Nintendogs + Cats, which introduced 3D graphics and the ability to interact with kittens alongside dogs.
