Advanced Variable Geo 2

Advanced Variable Geo 2 is a 2D arcade-style fighting game, developed and published by TGL, released for the PlayStation console in 1999. As the sequel to the first Advanced Variable Geo, this installment retains the franchise's signature all-female cast and 2D fighting mechanics while refining the system and introducing new characters. The PlayStation version of Advanced Variable Geo 2 features an extensive Story Mode, where the narrative of the Variable Geo tournament continues, complete with visual novel interludes and full voice acting.

The core combat in Advanced Variable Geo 2 focuses on aggressive, close-quarters action. Playing as one of the returning fighters, like Manami or Jun, or one of the new additions, such as Tamao, you are tasked with quickly closing the distance and applying pressure. Movement is quick, utilizing dashes and high jumps to control the space. The basic control scheme uses four attack buttons for light and heavy punches and kicks, which are used to construct basic combos. Like its predecessor, executing specific motions on the D-Pad, such as quarter-circle or dragon-punch inputs, followed by an attack button, performs signature special moves unique to each character in Advanced Variable Geo 2.

A key mechanical addition in Advanced Variable Geo 2 is the V-System (Variable System). This system allows you to build a V-Gauge by landing attacks and performing successful blocks. When the gauge is charged, you can activate powerful V-Attacks, which are essentially character-specific super moves that deal significant damage and often serve as the ending sequence of a successful combo. Mastering the V-System is crucial for competitive play; you must tactically decide whether to use the gauge for a high-damage ender or save it for an opportune moment to break your opponent's guard. The speed of the game requires players to have sharp reaction times to both initiate their offense and defend against the opponent's V-Attacks.

The PlayStation port of Advanced Variable Geo 2 maintains a high level of fidelity to the arcade source material. It features colorful, high-resolution sprites and fluid animation during the fast-paced combat. The CD format allows for a rich audio experience, including a powerful soundtrack and the full spoken dialogue during the Story Mode sequences.
