A long-running series of video games based on the iconic secret agent, offering globe-trotting espionage and action, and famously defined by the revolutionary console shooter, GoldenEye 007.

About the James Bond Series

The James Bond series boasts one of the longest and most varied histories in video games, with titles appearing on nearly every major console since the early 1980s. The digital adventures of the world's most famous secret agent have spanned numerous genres, from early text-based adventures and side-scrolling platformers to modern-day action games. This long history has seen many different developers and publishers take on the 007 license, each bringing their own interpretation of the super-spy's signature blend of action, stealth, and high-tech gadgetry.

The entire landscape of Bond gaming, and console shooters in general, was permanently changed with the release of GoldenEye 007 on the Nintendo 64 in 1997. Developed by Rare, the game was a monumental success that set a new standard for the first-person shooter genre. Its innovative features included objective-based missions, stealth mechanics, and context-sensitive hit reactions. However, its most significant contribution was its addictive and groundbreaking four-player split-screen multiplayer, which became a cultural touchstone and a fixture of social gaming for an entire generation.

In the years following GoldenEye's success, the Bond license was primarily handled by Electronic Arts and later Activision. This era produced a steady stream of solid titles, many of which were direct tie-ins to the films. Notable games from this period include Agent Under Fire and Nightfire, which refined the first-person shooter formula. A major standout was Everything or Nothing, which shifted to a third-person perspective to create a more cinematic experience, complete with the likenesses and voice work of the film's actors, including Pierce Brosnan as Bond.

After a period of dormancy following the release of 007 Legends in 2012, the future of James Bond in gaming is poised for a major reawakening. IO Interactive, the acclaimed studio behind the modern Hitman trilogy, is currently developing a brand-new James Bond title. This upcoming project will feature a wholly original story, exploring the origins of the agent. The announcement has generated immense excitement, as fans eagerly anticipate a modern, sophisticated take on espionage action from a developer known for its mastery of the spy-thriller genre.
