About Saurus
Founded in 1993, Saurus was a Japanese video game developer that became a prominent second-party studio for SNK's Neo Geo arcade and home systems. Rather than generic platformers, they specialized in high-octane arcade action and unique sports simulation games that defined the 90s arcade scene.
They are best remembered by retro fans for developing 'Shock Troopers' (1997), a top-down, 8-way run-and-gun masterpiece. The game allowed players to choose between 'Lonely Wolf' or 'Team Battle' modes and featured branching paths, intense shoot-'em-up action, and incredible pixel art that rivaled SNK's own 'Metal Slug' series. They successfully followed it up with 'Shock Troopers: 2nd Squad' in 1998.
Beyond run-and-guns, Saurus found major success in Japanese arcades with the 'Stakes Winner' series, a surprisingly deep and fast-paced horse racing action game. They also created the rare Neo Geo CD shoot 'em up 'Ironclad' (Choutetsu Brikinger). Though the company quietly disappeared in the early 2000s following SNK's financial troubles, their Neo Geo classics remain highly revered by arcade enthusiasts today.
