About Arc System Works
Founded in 1988 by Minoru Kidooka, Arc System Works is a legendary Japanese developer. While globally renowned today for their spectacular 2D fighting games, their retro roots lie in contract development and creating high-quality ports for Sega and other publishers during the 8-bit and 16-bit eras.
In the early 90s, they developed several notable titles, including the Sega Master System port of 'Battletoads' and the highly regarded 'Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon' beat 'em up for the Sega Mega Drive. Their trajectory changed forever in 1998 with the release of 'Guilty Gear' for the PlayStation. This game established their signature style: incredibly detailed anime-style 2D sprites, deep mechanical gameplay, and hard-rocking heavy metal soundtracks.
Later in their history (2015), Arc System Works acquired the intellectual property rights to Technōs Japan's classic franchises, including 'Double Dragon' and the 'Kunio-kun' (River City) series. This move transformed them into key preservers of retro arcade and console history alongside their ongoing dominance in the fighting game genre.
