About Ape Inc.
Ape Inc. was a unique Japanese video game development studio founded in 1989 by famed copywriter, essayist, and personality Shigesato Itoi. In collaboration with Nintendo, the studio was established with a clear goal: to create games that broke from the traditional fantasy tropes of the RPG genre, instead focusing on heartfelt stories set in modern, relatable worlds filled with quirky humor and emotional depth.
The studio's most famous and defining work is the creation of the 'Mother' series. Working closely with HAL Laboratory, Ape Inc. developed the original 'Mother' for the Famicom (later released in the West as 'EarthBound Beginnings') and its internationally acclaimed sequel, 'Mother 2' (released as 'EarthBound' on the SNES). These games were revolutionary for their time, swapping castles and dragons for suburban towns and everyday objects, and telling profound stories about friendship, family, and growing up.
While Ape Inc.'s time as a named studio was relatively short, its influence was significant. In 1995, following the success of 'Mother 2', the company was restructured and evolved into Creatures Inc. This successor company would go on to become one of the three primary stakeholders of The Pokémon Company and a key developer of Pokémon games and merchandise, ensuring that the creative spirit established at Ape continued to have a massive impact on the video game world for decades to come.
