Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of the Spirit is a story-driven fan-made dungeon crawler RPG (ROM Hack). It is built using the engine of the official Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky game for the Nintendo DS.
The adventure begins with the classic PMD premise: you choose your starter, transform into a Pokémon, and start venturing into procedurally generated dungeons. You guide your Pokémon and your partner through tile-based environments, engaging in turn-based combat, using items, and managing your team's moves and abilities.
A significant characteristic of Explorers of the Spirit is its new, full-length storyline. Unlike the original game, this hack gradually deviates from the base plot, offering a unique narrative that often acts as a continuation or alternative story after the original Explorers conclusion. You are challenged to build your exploration team by recruiting defeated wild Pokémon, forming teams of up to four allies.
