In Phantasy Star II, you assume the role of Rolf, a government agent tasked with investigating a widespread bio-formed monster outbreak and the growing malfunctions of the planetary defense system, MOTHER. You explore diverse locations, from bustling cities and quiet towns to dangerous, monster-infested dungeons and alien landscapes. Progress involves speaking with townspeople to gather clues, purchasing and equipping new weapons and armor for your growing party, and managing their limited magic points (MP) for restorative or offensive spells.
Combat in Phantasy Star II unfolds through random encounters. When a battle begins, you select commands for each party member from a menu: attack, defend, use a technique (magic spell), or use an item. Learning which techniques are effective against different enemy types is crucial. As you defeat enemies and complete quests, your characters gain experience points, allowing them to level up, increase their stats, and learn new abilities, preparing them for the challenges ahead as you uncover the truth behind the planet's crisis.
