Metal Slug 2 is the highly anticipated sequel to the arcade smash hit, developed by SNK and released in 1998 on the Neo Geo platform. Building upon the incredible foundation of its predecessor, this title expands the world and gameplay in every conceivable way while retaining the stunning, hand-drawn animation and chaotic action that fans fell in love with. The story of Metal Slug 2 sees the return of the villainous General Morden and his Rebel Army, who have unexpectedly forged an alliance with a mysterious alien race. To combat this new, twofold threat, the Peregrine Falcon Strike Force brings back heroes Marco and Tarma and introduces two new powerful operatives to the fight. Metal Slug 2 is a bigger, bolder, and more imaginative follow-up to the original classic.

The most significant addition to the gameplay of Metal Slug 2 is the introduction of two new playable characters. Joining Marco and Tarma are Eri Kasamoto and Fiolina 'Fio' Germi from the S.P.A.R.R.O.W.S. Intelligence Unit. This not only expands the roster but also introduces subtle gameplay variety. Another key new feature is the character transformation system. In certain stages, players can be turned into a slow, bandage-tossing Mummy by enemy attacks, or they can become 'fat' by collecting too much food, which changes the size of their weapon projectiles. The vehicle lineup also grew beyond the original tank. Metal Slug 2 introduces the 'Camel Slug,' a camel mounted with a vulcan cannon; the 'Slugnoid,' a bipedal walker mech with powerful close-range attacks; and the 'Slug Flyer,' a vertical take-off and landing jet for intense aerial combat. These new tools of destruction ensure that the action is more varied and over-the-top than ever before.

While a phenomenal game, the original arcade release of Metal Slug 2 was infamous for its significant slowdown and flickering when too many sprites were on screen. This was due to pushing the Neo Geo hardware to its absolute limits. In response, SNK later released an updated version, Metal Slug X, which fixed the performance issues and remixed the levels. Despite the technical hiccups of the original, the legacy of Metal Slug 2 is that of a brilliant and ambitious sequel.
