Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker is a role-playing game where you assume the role of a monster scout tasked with exploring the island of Gril.
Your journey involves venturing into various environments to encounter and battle wild monsters. During combat, you wield a special Monster Wand. By successfully using the wand and filling its gauge, you can recruit defeated monsters into your stable. You can then assemble a party of up to four monsters to accompany you on your adventures. These monsters participate in turn-based battles, where you issue commands to each creature to attack, defend, use skills, or attempt to scout more foes.
Beyond collecting, a central mechanic in Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker is monster synthesis. By combining two monsters from your stable, you can create a new monster. This new creature often inherits traits and skills from its parents, allowing for strategic development to overcome increasingly difficult challenges. Progressing through the game involves competing in increasingly difficult arena battles, exploring diverse regions, and piecing together the mystery surrounding strange events on the island.
