Your primary goal in Animal Forest is to establish yourself in the community. You'll take up residence in a small house and work to pay off a loan to Tom Nook, the local shop owner. This debt is repaid by collecting resources: you can catch fish in the rivers and sea, find insects in the fields and trees, dig up fossils buried underground, and gather various items. These collected goods can be sold to Tom Nook to fund your mortgage payments and house expansions.
Beyond chores, Animal Forest focuses on the rhythm of daily life. The game operates on a real-time clock, meaning seasons change, holidays occur, and specific events happen on their actual calendar dates. You can customize your house's interior and exterior, plant trees and flowers, write letters to your neighbors, and engage in conversations with the animal villagers, each with their own distinct personalities. Your progress is measured by the growth of your home and your relationships within the village, rather than a traditional victory condition.
