About the Power Instinct Series
Power Instinct is a series of 2D fighting games that first appeared in arcades in 1993, later seeing releases on home consoles. Developed by Atlus, these games are known for their distinctive visual style and often quirky cast of characters.
The original Power Instinct arcade game, released in 1993, featured a roster of 12 selectable characters. Combat revolves around depleting an opponent's health bar through standard attacks and special techniques. To perform these more powerful moves, players needed to build up a 'Power Gauge' by landing hits or blocking. The sequel, Power Instinct 2 (also known as Battle Instinct), arrived in 1994, expanding the roster to 14 characters and introducing tag-team mechanics. This entry refined the gauge system and introduced new characters like the young inventor Tim and his dog Rusty.
Later entries, such as Groove on Fight (1997), continued to evolve the formula. Groove on Fight featured 16 playable characters and introduced destructible environments, allowing fighters to break through parts of the background. The core gameplay loop in Power Instinct titles consistently involves mastering each character's unique special moves and super attacks, often tied to a meter that fills throughout the match, allowing for screen-clearing 'Craziness' attacks.
