About the Parodius Series
Parodius is a series of Japanese shoot 'em up games known for its incredibly silly and surreal take on the genre, often parodying Konami's own Gradius series. The first game, Parodius Da!, debuted in arcades in 1988 before arriving on home consoles like the MSX and Famicom in 1990.
The core gameplay in Parodius involves navigating your chosen craft through horizontal scrolling levels, blasting away a menagerie of peculiar foes. Like its Gradius inspiration, collecting power-up capsules allows you to cycle through and select enhancements. Key power-ups include the Speed Up, Missile, Ripple, Laser, and the indispensable Option units that duplicate your shots. Each game in the Parodius series introduces a roster of unique playable characters, each with their own distinct abilities and visual flair, moving beyond the standard Vic Viper.
What truly sets the Parodius games apart are their outlandish themes and characters. You might find yourself piloting through levels populated by dancing bell bottoms, giant lipsticks, or sentient sushi. Enemies range from comical birds to intergalactic space cows.
