About the Mappy Series
Mappy is a maze arcade game developed by Namco, first released in 1983. It was originally available in arcades and later ported to numerous home systems, becoming a staple of early home computer and console gaming.
In Mappy, you take on the role of Mappy, a police mouse tasked with recovering stolen goods from a gang of cats known as the Meowky. The game unfolds across a series of apartment floors, each filled with furniture and doors. Your objective is to collect all the stolen items, like valuable dishes and rings, scattered throughout the level. As Mappy moves, the cats will pursue him. You can use the bouncing doors to your advantage; when Mappy walks through a door, it bounces open, and if a cat is directly behind him and hits the door as it closes, the cat will be temporarily stunned, allowing Mappy to escape or continue collecting items.
Beyond the bouncing doors, Mappy can utilize other elements within the environment. Trampolines are present on certain floors, allowing Mappy to quickly ascend to higher levels. Occasionally, a bonus item like a pie or a basketball might appear, which Mappy can pick up and throw at the cats for points. The cats, in turn, can also disrupt Mappy by breaking open furniture, which can cause items to fall and potentially harm Mappy if he is underneath. Successfully clearing a floor requires careful movement, timing the use of doors, and strategic collection of all the target items before the cats corner you. The Mappy series continued with various ports and some sequels, maintaining its distinctive maze-chase gameplay.
