Duke Nukem 3D, developed by 3D Realms, was a significant entry, built on the Build engine to render interactive 2.5D environments. The game features five distinct episodes, each comprising several levels filled with destructible elements and hidden areas. Players command Duke through these urban landscapes and beyond, armed with an arsenal of eight distinct weapons. These range from familiar firearms like the shotgun and Ripper Chaingun to more exotic tools such as the Freeze Thrower, which encases enemies in ice before they can be shattered, and the Shrinker, which reduces foes to a size where Duke can stomp on them. Duke also had access to useful gear like Steroids for increased movement speed, Night Vision Goggles for dimly lit areas, and the Holoduke, a holographic decoy to distract enemies. Throughout his missions, Duke Nukem confronts a variety of alien adversaries, including the pig-like Pig Cops, the gelatinous Octabrains, and the formidable Cycloids.

The Duke Nukem series is known for its over-the-top action, mature humor, and the distinctive personality of its protagonist.
