About Winkysoft
Winkysoft (Winky Soft) was a Japanese video game developer founded in 1983. They are most historically significant for their long-term partnership with Banpresto, during which they created and developed the 'Super Robot Wars' (Super Robot Taisen) series. This franchise, which crosses over mecha from various anime series like Gundam and Mazinger Z into a single strategy game, became a massive cultural phenomenon in Japan.
During the 1990s, Winkysoft developed the classic 'DC War' era of Super Robot Wars (including SRW 2, 3, EX, 4, and F/F Final). These games defined the Simulation RPG (SRPG) genre with their challenging difficulty, deep strategic gameplay, and passionate recreation of robot animations. They were also responsible for the 'Masou Kishin' (The Lord of Elemental) series, which introduced original mecha and a rich fantasy storyline to the SRW universe.
Though the studio declared bankruptcy in 2015, their legacy lives on. They established the template for mecha strategy games that continues to be used today. Besides SRW, they also worked on titles involving the Macross franchise and other anime adaptations, always focusing on tactical gameplay and faithful representation of the source material.
