About Synergy Inc. Games
Synergy Inc. (widely known in Japan as Synergy Geometrics) was an avant-garde multimedia developer established in Tokyo, Japan. Operating during the golden age of CD-ROM interactive media in the 1990s, the studio became a global cornerstone for experimental electronic art, bridging the gap between surreal visual design, industrial music, and cinematic sci-fi storytelling.
The studio achieved immense international critical acclaim through its brilliant collaboration with visionary director Haruhiko Shono. Their defining masterpiece, GADGET: Past as Future (originally released in 1993 and updated later as a worldwide phenomenon), stood out as a profound psychological rail-adventure. Set in a bleak, retro-futuristic totalitarian world, the game captivated players with its cold dieselpunk aesthetic, haunting ambient soundtracks, and hypnotic, non-linear technological mystery.
Beyond GADGET, Synergy developed other cult interactive projects such as Alice: An Interactive Museum and L-Zone, winning numerous multimedia grand prix awards globally. Although the studio faded as the industry shifted toward traditional 3D polygon gaming engines, their legacy of treating video games as pure, high-concept modern art remains an indelible milestone in retro tech history.
