About Nichibutsu
Nihon Bussan Co., Ltd., widely known by its brand name Nichibutsu, was a Japanese video game developer founded in 1970. Originally an amusement equipment manufacturer, they became a prominent force during the golden age of arcade gaming, creating highly influential and innovative titles.
Retro gaming fans best remember Nichibutsu for their iconic vertical shoot 'em ups. After the success of 'Moon Cresta' in 1980, they released their masterpiece, 'Terra Cresta', in 1985. 'Terra Cresta' stood out with its formation system, where players could rescue and dock with different ship parts to increase firepower and temporarily transform into an invincible flaming phoenix. This docking mechanic became a signature of Nichibutsu's shooting games.
Beyond shooters, they made arcade history with 'Crazy Climber' (1980), which used a unique twin-stick control scheme for scaling skyscrapers while dodging closing windows, falling objects, and giant birds. In their later years, Nichibutsu shifted heavily toward producing arcade Mahjong games before ultimately leaving the video game industry in the 2000s. Today, their classic IPs are preserved and owned by Hamster Corporation.
