About Human Entertainment
Founded in 1983, Human Entertainment was a highly influential Japanese video game developer and publisher. Operating primarily during the 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit eras, the studio was known for pushing the boundaries of genre conventions and creating deeply atmospheric, innovative experiences.
They are perhaps best known for defining the survival horror genre with the original 'Clock Tower' (1995) for the Super Famicom. Players controlled Jennifer Simpson as she evaded the relentless Scissorman using stealth and puzzle-solving. They also pioneered other genres with the deep simulation mechanics of the long-running 'Fire Pro Wrestling' series, and the horror visual novel 'Gakkou de Atta Kowai Hanashi'.
For strategy RPG fans, Human Entertainment is also fondly remembered for developing 'Vanguard Bandits' (known in Japan as 'Epica Stella'). This PlayStation tactical RPG blended challenging grid-based combat with a rich fantasy narrative featuring giant mechas. Although the company declared bankruptcy and closed in 2000, its legacy lives on, as former staff members went on to form acclaimed studios like Spike, Sandlot, and Nude Maker.
