About G-Craft
Founded in 1993 by Toshiro Tsuchida, G-Craft was a highly influential Japanese development studio during the 16-bit and 32-bit eras. Rather than generic retro games, they were true pioneers of the Strategy RPG (SRPG) genre, creating deep, narrative-driven tactical experiences that defined a generation.
Their first major breakthrough was 'Front Mission' (1995) for the Super Famicom, published by Squaresoft. This gritty, mecha-based tactical RPG was widely praised for its deep customization (wanzer parts) and mature storyline. That same year, they released another monumental title: 'Arc the Lad' for the original PlayStation, published by Sony. This game, along with its massive sequel 'Arc the Lad II' (1996), became foundational RPGs for the PS1, blending tactical grid-based combat with a sweeping fantasy epic.
G-Craft's incredible talent in crafting strategy games eventually led to their formal absorption into Squaresoft (now Square Enix) in the late 1990s. While the G-Craft name ceased to exist as an independent entity, its key staff, including Tsuchida, continued to shape the 'Front Mission' series and influence major Square Enix titles like 'Final Fantasy X'. Their legacy remains firmly cemented in the pantheon of classic JRPG developers.
