Founded in 1991 by EA founder Trip Hawkins, The 3DO Company started with a bold vision to revolutionize the hardware market. Instead of manufacturing their own console, they created the specifications for the 3DO Interactive Multiplayer and licensed it to companies like Panasonic and GoldStar. While it hosted early hits like 'Crash 'n Burn', 'Return Fire', and 'Gex', the console ultimately failed due to its exorbitant launch price.
Following the hardware market exit in 1996, 3DO successfully pivoted to become a multi-platform third-party video game developer and publisher. Their most significant move during this era was the acquisition of New World Computing, bringing the legendary 'Might and Magic' RPGs and the incredibly popular turn-based strategy franchise, 'Heroes of Might and Magic', under the 3DO banner. 'Heroes of Might and Magic III' (1999) remains one of their crowning achievements, widely considered a masterpiece of the strategy genre.
In addition to publishing, 3DO developed major in-house franchises, most notably the highly lucrative 'Army Men' series, which saw players commanding plastic green toy soldiers in real-world environments. Despite their software success in the late 90s, over-reliance on the 'Army Men' brand and financial struggles led to the company's bankruptcy in 2003. Their iconic intellectual properties, including 'Heroes of Might and Magic', were subsequently auctioned off to publishers like Ubisoft.
